I think it's important to make the client understand you are providing your expertise and time, not a flat fee product. When they hire you it needs to be clear that they are paying you to be a guide and that some bumps along the way can be expected. If you do good work and have references, selling yourself as an expert is the key to billing your time for what its worth. It's a different way of looking at it for many of your clients and it might help open their eyes to why you can't just say I'll build it for $x dollars. Clients that don't understand this up front might be clients you don't want to have.

Note: I do web development and work for Billmation www.billmation.com which provides recurring billing services to web designers.

..Missed this from my last comment, may be of some use. If you have an Iphone there are a few good timesheet applications to allow you to track time against a project.

I use one called easy timesheet; Just punch in the project details and hourly rate and whenever you work on that project click the start button.

Just found your site too, great article! I too often find myself charging say £25 an hour and then spending way more than the allotted time on the project.

I suppose a lot of it is down to how good you are at what you do. The better you get the quicker you will be and completing the task.

I find that as I try to push the boundaries on every project I do I will inevitably have to spend more time increasing my knowledge on those "boundary pushing" ideas.
